Retirement flag
I put in my retirement papers last week after 22 years in the Air Force (11 years active, 11 as a reservist). I won't be having a ceremony, but I will receive an American flag. Here's part of why and what it means.

I read the comment about the flag-raiser at Iwo Jima. Technically, that is correct, because there were actually two flag-raisings atop Mt. Suribachi on Feb. 23, 1945. This man took part in the first, far less famous one. However, the second flag-raising was the one captured by Joe Rosenthal in that memorable photograph. Three of the participants captured in that photograph were killed during the battle, and the last survivor of the group, Navy corpsman John Bradley, passed away at age 70 on Jan. 10, 1994. In the photograph, he is the one in the center, in full profile.
